Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
