Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
